The School for New Learning offers students the chance to translate their own life experience into college credit for competence through a process of reflective independent learning. There are several options for independent learning (talk to us about these and/or refer to the Foundations of Adult Learning Resource Book), but the one most frequently, and most successfully, used is the Independent Learning Pursuit

You need evidence of the following when submitting prior learning for assessment:

  • Conceptual Understanding
  • Reasoning Skills
  • College-level Standards
  • Relevance to Competence Framework and Educational Goals
  • Articulation of relevant personal experience

This evidence is
ALMOST ALWAYS submitted in an essay format in conjunction as described by the attached document (ILP Format). Along with the written report and any other supplemental evidence/artifacts, you must submit it with an ILP form as the coversheet. It is also important that you look at the Assessment Criteria for which you're using prior learning evidence. And, finally, just so there are no surprises, you need to pay attention to the assessment response criteria the Second Reader will use to assess your prior learning. Prior learning assessment is performed by a second reader assigned by the Committee for the Assessment of Student Competence (CASC).

These Criteria "unpack" the fine points of each competence statement on the grid and give the student and assessors a clear sense of what each competence statement means. If your independent work is (initially) rejected, it is almost always due to the lack of conformity to the Criteria for Assessment.

Prior learning used to fulfill competences in the
Focus Area is assessed by the faculty mentor and the professional advisor. Again, look at the criteria on the assessment response form for the focus area so there are no surprises.

Each ILP must be submitted with an
Independent Learning Pursuit Form as its cover. And, unless there is a logical and compelling reason to exclude it, each ILP or GIS must include a well-cited bibliography. Please contact your mentor immediately if you are unclear about citation protocol.

ILPs are a way to use life experience to demonstrate competence. There is an assessment fee which is currently $150.00.
