Project Title: Morality, Community, and Spirituality in the Life Narratives of Prosocial Individuals
Description of Project: My project uses in-depth interview data to analyze what distinguishes highly prosocial individuals, or people who engage in extensive volunteering and charitable giving, from less prosocial ones. I use transcribed interviews from ninety-one respondents to the 1995 Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study, a nationally representative random sample of adults aged 25-70. Interviewers asked each respondent detailed questions about their involvement in volunteer work and charitable giving, how they defined morality, whether they had experienced crises of moral doubt and error, their connections to communities, and their religious beliefs. The interviews are already fully transcribed.

Description of Project: In general, the project involves the development of a community-based mentoring program and coping intervention for low-income youth in Chicago. Dr. Kathy Grant in the psych department just received a 3-year grant to develop this program. I (David) work under Dr. Grant (and other Investigators at other universities in Chicago) as leader of the Mentoring component of this project. Our “sub-team” is conducting a review of the academic literature as well as collecting reports from mentoring organizations (e.g., Big Brothers/Big Sisters) in order to gain a comprehensive knowledge base of the field, which will inform the actual development of our program.
Each member of the team is responsible for finding, reading, and synthesizing relevant journal articles, reports, conference presentations, etc. In addition, everyone must attend Dr. Grant’s weekly lab meetings on Mondays 11am-12pm, and our Mentoring sub-team will likely have short meetings every other week at whatever time is best for the members to meet. Dr. Grant has a minimum requirement for lab members to contribute 4 hrs/week (this includes meetings), and of course, more time is always welcome.

Leadership Alliance - Summer Research Early Identification Program
The Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP), offers undergraduates, interested in pursuing a PhD or MD/PhD, the opportunity to work for eight to ten weeks under the guidance of a faculty or research mentor at a participating Alliance institution. Through this one-on-one collaboration, students gain theoretical knowledge and practical training in academic research and scientific experimentation. The SR-EIP is designed to encourage students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, social sciences and humanities to consider research careers in the academic, public or private sectors. Students are required to present a written report and/or abstract at the end of their summer research activity and complete a program evaluation. All participants are expected to make oral or poster presentations of their research at the Leadership Alliance’s annual, national symposium. This all expense paid summer internship provides students with a competitive stipend, travel and housing.
Committee on Institutional Cooperation - Summer Research Opportunity Program
The Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) is a gateway to graduate education at CIC universities. The goal of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented students who pursue graduate study and research careers. SROP helps prepare undergraduates for graduate study through intensive research experiences with faculty mentors and enrichment activities.
The NIH offer an array of funding opportunities for undergraduates and graduate students alike.
Undergraduate and Graduate students interested in interdisciplinary research, apply for NSF funding.
The Annie E. Casey Foundation - Research Associate

Devereux Institute of Clinical Training & Research:
Professional Psychology Traineeship
The full-time, 12-month Professional Psychology Traineeship is an experiential learning program for recent college graduates who are considering graduate study in psychology or a related behavioral healthcare field. The program provides a supervised learning experience combining didactic and hands-on training. In keeping with the scientist-practitioner model of professional psychology, the program emphasizes training in both applied psychological research and clinical services. A major goal of the program is to expose trainees to the variety of roles and functions of practicing professional psychologists and thereby enable them to consolidate and refine their career goals before making an informed decision to enter professional psychology as a career.

The Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia
The Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia is pleased to inform you of the first Risk and Prevention in Education Sciences (RPES) Summer Undergraduate Research Program. This fully-funded 8-week program will introduce students from under-represented groups to ongoing research occurring at UVa and will give them experience to help make them qualified candidates for doctorate programs in education research. Students will have the opportunity to collect and analyze data, write a section of a research paper, participate in research meetings, and attend and participate in conferences.
Please help us reach students from groups under-represented in education science. We would appreciate your efforts in bringing the summer internship opportunity to the attention of your students and supporting their efforts through the application process.
