Beginning Makeup

COURSE OUTLINE 2003-04

INSTRUCTOR: Nan Zabriskie

x57980 E-mail: nzabrisk@depaul.edu

Course objective: Makeup is a two-quarter course designed to give the actor and designer facility in conceiving and creating the makeup for a given character he or she might have to portray on stage. The goal of the course is to demystify the art of makeup by doing twenty weeks of character development, visual research and hands on painting that will produce a basic level of comfort with make up techniques..

First Quarter:

•  Basic color theory (additive & subtractive mixing, color wheel, etc.)

•  Product use and technique(using both cream and cake makeup)

•  Use of chiaroscuro to create hard and soft edges to sculpt the face

•  Painting applied to character analysis

Second Quarter:

•  3D sculpting with wax, putty, latex and tissue

•  Use of crepe hair to create effects

•  Developing animal makeups

•  Creating a likeness

Required materials:

•  Richard Corson's Stage Makeup: 9th Edition . Depaul Bookstore for $110 (new) or $82 (used). If you have access to an 8 th edition, you may use that with some corrections in chapter numbers. This is the definitive reference text for stage makeup and will be a good reference for you far past your Theatre School years. The human bone structure changes little, as do techniques of using chiaroscuro to make it appear different on stage. Changes occur in products and styles which can be updated on your own.

•  Ben Nye's Student makeup kit . Depaul Bookstore for $41. It is available in White Male, White Female, Light Brown (medium olive skin tone to butterscotch) Dark Brown.(light mocha skin tone to espresso)* write your initials on each element of your kit with a sharpie

•  Hand Towel/wash cloth   (you can buy from us, $2 hand towel/$1 wash rag)

•  Cold cream for clean up (Ponds, Albolene, etc. )

•  Hair bands , bandanas, clips, scrunchies, etc. to keep hair off face

•  1-1/2” or 2” binder for Makeup Morgue and class notes (with paper and dividers)

•  Scissors (nice small pointed ones are ideal, but bring something)

Suggested materials:

•  Soap or cleansing bar (if you do not like our institutional soap)

•  Skin toner and moisturizer (these will save you during the long winter.)

•  Colored pencils (to use on your face worksheets)

*Attendance:

We have a great deal of material to cover in 20 weeks and being a new skill to many of you, the only way to “get it in to your body” and develop confidence is to do lots of painting. Attendance is mandatory barring illness . If you are ill, call (or have your roommate call) my voice mail in the makeup room (773-325-7980) before class starts. If for some reason you can't get through on that number call the main office.(773-325-7917) and they will get the message to me. This is an excused absence and must be made up with an assistant within one week (assuming, of course, that you are healthy again) . It is your responsibility to reach the assistant and set up the appointment.

•  After 1 unexcused absence your final grade may drop down 1 full grade with subsequent absences

•  After 3 times being late your final class grade may go down 1 full grade

*see TTS student handbook for further notes on school attendance policy

Grade:

The most important thing for you to take away from this class is confidence in your design and execution skills. .If your natural “art skills” are not what you want them to be, you will find that careful preparation and practice most often overcome lack of art training.

Your final class grade will be based on the following:

•  Class attendance (as stated above)

•  10%Class participation/assimilation or execution of demos and reading

•  10%Notebook/Makeup Morgue

•  10%Homework (including in -class generated color wheel and chiaroscuro exercise)

•  40% 4 Major makeups (2 grades on each, 1 for facesheet 1 for final execution)

•  20%-Final Exam (part written, part practical)

Objectively, I will be looking at several points in assigning a grade to you Major makeups.

•  Was it researched, drawn and thought through carefully as evidenced by the face sheet? (This is the face sheet grade)

•  Is the makeup cleanly and precisely applied according to concepts laid out in class?(This is part of the execution grade)

•  Was it completed in the allotted time? (This is part of the execution grade)

•  Will it read from the assigned distance? (The Reskin is the space we go for most often) (This is part of the execution grade)

•  Is it effective in reflecting the character you have analyzed? (This is part of the execution grade)

Remember that the following key is used in the evaluation of achievement. (as outlined in the Student Handbook)

A -The instructor judged the student to have accomplished the stated objectives of the course in an EXCELLENT manner

B - …VERY GOOD…

C – …SATISFACTORY…

D -…POOR…

F – The instructor judged the student NOT to have accomplished the stated objectives of the course.

Note on incompletes. (as outlined in the Student Handbook)

IN - Temporary grade indicating that the student has a satisfactory record in work completed, but for unusual or unforeseen circumstances not encountered by other students in the class and acceptable to the instructor is prevented from completing the course requirements by the end of the term. An incomplete grade may not be assigned unless the student has formally requested it from the instructor, and the instructor has given his or her permission for the student receiving and incomplete grade.

A FEW MORE NOTES :

•  NO HEAD PHONES may be worn during class.

•  EATING OR DRINKING during class discussions and demos only- NOT DURING MAKE-UP APPLICATION PROCESS .

•  The instructor reserves the right to select any music that is played during application times…..probably classical.

•  HAVE FUN!
