Preliminary Information
Purpose and Description of the
Placement Essay
The purpose of this writing assignment
is to provide us with a representative sample of your writing. We
will look at your essay and your other admissions materials, including
test scores, transcripts, and other documents, to determine the courses
you will need to take.
THIS ASSIGNMENT
IS NOT A TEST. The placement
process is designed to get you off to the most appropriate start possible
as you begin or continue your university work at DePaul. We look
at your records and your work as a whole, and balance each part of your
admissions portfolio.
This assignment asks you to use some
articles in a short expository essay of about 2-4 typed, double-spaced
pages (about 750-1000 words). You will be
able to view the readings before you view the writing assignment.
Ground Rules
The
Honesty
Policy applies to the Writing as well as the Mathematics
assessments. The Online Placement Essay gives you the opportunity
to compose your essay in a comfortable environment of your choice and to
a certain extent on your own terms. You may write and revise your work
using your usual composing and editing tools. This opportunity comes
with some responsibilities on your part, and they are listed below:
1. You are responsible
for writing your own paper. You must not have someone help you write
the essay or write it for you. You will write an oath when you submit
your essay, in which you will testify that you are the sole author of the
essay you send in.
2. You are responsible for
completing the essay and submitting it on time, according to the deadline
you were given when you registered for this option. If you do not
submit your essay on time, you cannot re-do this exercise. You must
come to campus in person and write a different essay during another orientation
program (one that does not offer online assessment).
Everything about the placement process
is designed to help you, so it is very much in your own best interest to
give us a truly representative sample of your work.
