Class one
  1. Brief full class discussion: Ask students to explain "description" and "evaluation." Take notes on the board
  2. Distribute photos to students (each student gets 1 of the 10) and give them 20 minutes to write a description and evaluation of a photo
  3. Students read their pieces to one other student in the class and make revisions (15 minutes)
  4. 1/2 the students in the class will read their writing aloud and the instructor can ask afterwards for a clarification of what was description and what was evaluation (about 40 minutes)

  5. Distribute editorial-type cartoons and students write (20-30 minutes)
    • describe the cartoon itself
    • describe the explicit message of the cartoon (probably 2-3-4 sentences)
    • evaluate the effectiveness of the way the message was presented
    • explain whether or not the student agrees with this message
  6. Students read the description written by a classmate with the same cartoon and discuss ways of clarifying the writing

  7. Students work individually to correct grammar from handout
  8. Students work in pair to check notes
  9. Full class discussion of errors in grammar
  10. Explain the naming conventions for the assignments and show students how to use BlackBoard (see handout provided in the prep for this class)
