Due 9/24

Worth 100 points

Grading Criteria

Objective: To begin looking at websites with a critical eye. To prepare your shrike/hawk account for the web pages you will be creating. To become familiar with FTP. To determine the topic of your course Website.

The first homework is in several parts and worth a total of 100 points.

Begin by critiquing one of your favorite Websites. If you have no favorite site, pick one that looks interesting. After you have chosen a site, flex your critical muscle by asking yourself:

  • What is the purpose of the site?
  • Who is the target audience?
  • What is good about the site?
  • What makes the site usable?
  • How would you make it better?

Once you have reviewed your site, create a 2-3 page paper out of your findings. Remember to describe the process you went through that allowed you to arrive at your conclusions. Bring a hard cope to class next Tuesday 9/24.

Then,

  1. Read these: http://service.depaul.edu/dpo/support/unix/intro.html
    http://service.depaul.edu/dpo/homepage.html
Create a public_html file in your hawk or shrike account. This will be the location for all of your web pages and web related documents. You will need to set the permissions on your account.

  2. Introduce yourself to FTP. Read this:
    http://webreference.com/roadmap/map13.html

  3. Then go to www.download.com or www.tucows.com or the software download site of your choice and choose an FTP client.

  4. You will then need to upload your paper to your shrike or hawk account into the pub_html folder and then send me the URL of the paper.

  5. Come up with a topic for the web page you will be working on for the class. This topic needs to be business oriented in some way. No 'personal' pages (i.e. lists of pictures and things you like). I will go over and approve (or not) your topic during the second half of class next week.
