HCI 201: Multimedia and
the World wide Web
Homework Guidelines
This class is an overview of
how HCI types create Webpages. The class has a business as opposed to
entertainment focus and as such I am trying to prepare you for what the
working world expects.
All assignments
must be typed. Hand written assignments will not be accepted.
- My expectations are that
you will do your best and hand in quality work. Before you hand anything
in consider if you would submit it to your employer before asking for
a raise.
- This is not an English
class BUT if I cannot understand what you are attempting to communicate
then I will not be able to grade it. I know that many students at DePaul
are ESL, and DePaul provides many facilities to help you with language
difficulties. Take advantage of these services.
- I expect all students to
have the reading done by class time. If you have questions about the
reading bring them to class or e-mail me with them. The same applies
for questions about assignments.
- All assignments need to
be typed, spell-checked and grammar-proofed. I have specified what is
expected for the content of each assignment. It is your responsibility
to let me know before the assignment is due if something is unclear
to you about said assignment.
- Measures of quality include
appropriateness of solution, proper construction, and completeness.
Quality also includes turning in assignments on-time and as a printed
document.
- Due dates for assignments
are posted on the class schedule.
I adhere to the university policies on plagiarism
and incomplete.
Homework Tips
- Use business writing, not
creative writing techniques.
- Use typographical tools
to improve readability - spacing, headings, bolding. In your html pages
this will require additional formatting but the effort is well worth
the enhanced readability.
- Use document checking tools
available to you, e.g. Spell Check, Grammar Check.
- Have someone other than
you read and critique the work before turning it in.
- Proofread it from a printed
source as mistakes are often missed online.
- Don't wait until the last
minute to print your document.
- A final check: Would you
understand your document if you did not know the details of the assignment?
Here are the Rules for Handing
In Assignments:
- Many assignments require
you to email me the URL of your page otherwise each assignment must
be turned in as a printed document at class time unless otherwise noted.
If you want to turn it in before class, do so at the CTI 4th floor office-and
have them date/time stamp it. Also e-mail me telling me you have turned
it in at the office.
- Late assignments:
You have 24 hours from the due date to turn it into the CTI office
on the 4th floor. Do not e-mail it to me as I will not accept e-mail
assignments. It will be worth 50% of the total amount of points-before
marking for correctness etc. E-mail me to inform me that you have turned
it in at the CTI office. No assignments will be accepted after the
initial 24 hour period.
- DO NOT send me e-mail
messages with attachments. I will not open the attachments this means
you should not e-mail me your homework
Class Participation:
- Class Participation is 20%
of your final grade.
- Class attendance is mandatory
as it is an important part of class participation. Each class will only
be as useful as you make it.
- Ask questions about your
reading, homework, and/or the lecture material. If you don't understand
something chances are many others in the class are confused as well.
Help them and yourself by asking for clarification.
- I will create class activities
to help you grasp the material do your best to complete the activities.
For those who do not like
to speak up in class
- Bring in/e-mail articles
of interest related to Human Computer Interaction and related wed design
issues.
- Find Websites that are related
to the topics we are studying and e-mail me the URL
