The course will operate in seminar format. Learners engage the materials and come prepared to discuss the content of articles and websites. Each learner is responsible for being prepared and for contributing to the discourse in class where controversy will inevitably emerge.
In a seminar course, class participation and discussion are essential to a successful experience and learning.
What is the meaning of cultural isolation in virtual community?
It is important in this course to stay up with the readings. Since this is a 10-week course, but meeting 5 times on every other Saturday, it seems like a long time between classes and it can seem like assignments can be put off. However, the readings are dense and require considerable reflection as you engage the materials. It is important, therefore, to set a calendar for the course and stick to the reading times.
In this light, I am requiring short reflective pieces where learners can demonstrate analysis and synthesis as the course progresses rather than a paper at the end of the course. In addition, there will be Blackboard assignments and learners are expected to participate in on-line discussions.
