HCI 201 Multimedia and the World Wide Web
Fall 1999 - Section 703 - Evaluating Web Sites
When you are reviewing a Web site, look for...
- Purpose
- Aesthetic Design
- Navigation
- Content
Purpose
- Is the site successful in its stated or implied purpose?
- If the purpose is not explicitly stated, can you tell what the purpose of the site is anyway?
- Is the site's purpose to:
- Sell?
- Entertain?
- Inform?
- Something else?
Aesthetic Design
- Is the design/layout aesthetically pleasing?
- Does the design/layout help or hinder the readability, navigation and accessibility of the site?
Navigation
Navigation is very important. It can make the difference between a good and a bad experience for the user.
Most people ask four basic questions when they are getting around (anything)...
- Where am I?
- Where can I go?
- How will I get there?
- How can I get back to where I was before?
Successful and useful navigation should...
- Be easily learned
- Remain consistent
- Provide feedback
- Offer alternatives
- Provide clear visual messages
- Use clear and understandable labels
Does the site you're reviewing fulfill these goals?
Content
- Does the content relate to and support the site's purpose?
- Does it use a simple and natural dialogue?
- Does it 'speak the language' of the site's target audience?
- Is the tone consistent throughout the site?
Review Process
- Go through the site one page at a time.
- Make notes about your first impressions and thoughts as you go. Don't try to remember what you have seen and experienced.
- First time through: focus on the content and overall design.
- Second time through: review the navigation.
