PLEASE..., when you're posting homeworks on the Web, do not replace older work with new assignments. Instead, add a link to a new page. Especially, when I have not yet graded the older homework. Assume that I have not yet graded an assignment until you've received the grade report from me.

As I have been getting calls and e-mails requesting assistance with the WS_FTP32 application, here are the steps necessary for setting up a shrike profile and connecting to the shrike server.

When you have installed and launched WS_FTP32, you should be presented with a window titled "Session Properties". Four tabs are available to you: "General," "Startup," "Advanced," and "Firewall." You only need to deal with the "General" tab which should be the one you initially see.

To create a new profile for shrike, fill the following information into the fields available on the "General" tab.

Be sure the "Save Pwd" checkbox is checked. That way you won't have to enter your password each time you want to FTP to shrike. Then click the "OK" button. The "Session Properties" window will save your new profile and close. The program should also automatically connect you to the shrike server, if it does not, just click the "Connect" button at the far left bottom of the application window.

You can now FTP back and forth as much as you want between your local computer and shrike. When you are finished, click the "Close" button to logout and close the server connection. Then you can safely exit the program.

If you want to reopen your FTP connection to shrike or connect to another server, click the "Connect" button to make the "Session Properties" window reappear. Select from the pop-up list the server profile you created, and click "Ok" to continue as described above.

Gabriel Pentelie sent me the following URL of a site that presents historical "maps" showing the growth and development of the ARPANET, Internet and Usenet. For anyone who is interested, check out: Historical Maps of ARPANET and the Internet

Sunday, Sept. 19
I have made a slight change to the course schedule. I have switched the dates for the topics "Typography on the Web" and "Design Process/Know Your Audience." This will not affect the reading assignments.
