Biography

Edmund Lawler is an instructor in the Department of Communication where he teaches journalism and advertising. He advises the student newspaper, The DePaulia, winner of six first-place awards in 1999 for editorial excellence from Illinois College Press Association, tied for the most in the state. Prior to joining the faculty in 1996, Lawler was a writer and editor for daily newspapers in Phoenix, Tucson, Santa Barbara and Indianapolis and for the City News Bureau of Chicago and the Chicago bureau of the Associated Press. He was also the managing editor for Advertising Age's Business Marketing magazine. He continues to write a monthly column for the magazine that critiques business-to-business advertising.

In his role as columnist, Lawler has given more than 100 presentations on business advertising to corporate audiences from Montreal to Buenos Aires. He is the author or co-author of four books, three of them on marketing and advertising. They are: "Marketing Masters: Secrets of America's Best Companies," which was translated into five languages; "Copy Chasers on Creating Business-to-Business Ads," and "Underdog Marketing: Successful Strategies to Outmarket the Leader." He has a degree in journalism from Drake University and a master's degree in government and international relations from the University of Notre Dame.
