Guidelines For Chat Discussions

Team Leaders Responsibilities:

1) Preparation

Team leaders are expected to have thoroughly reviewed the module topics for the week, including readings, labs, message board postings and fieldtrips.

Team leaders should be signed into the chat session several minutes before it is scheduled to begin and should note which team members enter and participate.

2) Developing questions

Team leaders should bring several questions of their own to the chat session and may use these to initiate the chat discussion.

3) Requesting questions from the team

A team leader may request questions from their team a few days in advance to help in discussion moderation. A team leader should request and pose additional questions during and resulting from the the course of the chat discussion.

4) Engaging all team members

A team member should be attentive to providing opportunities for all team members to interact with one another.

5) Time Management of session

Team members should keep the discussion moving along so that balanced attention is given to all of the module topics for that week(s). (Of course, one topic may be deemed of greater discussion value to the group and be emphasized at greater length at the team leader's discretion.)

Sessions "end on time" (1.5-2.0 hours), however any team members that wish to go beyond the session should be encouraged to do so under their own direction.

6) Reporting out to the Rest of the Class

Leaders should provide a good summary of their session using the Discussion Leadership Form provided on the course website no later than 4 days after asession and preferably earlier.
