Letter Spacing -- The horizontal space that letters occupy.
Monospacing
Each character takes the same amount of horizontal space.
An "

" takes up the same amount of space as an "
i
".
Courier is an example of a monospaced typeface.
Proportional Spacing
Each character gets an amount of horizontal space proportional to its width.
An "
m
" takes up more space than an "
i
".
Times New Roman is proportionally spaced.
Serif Design -- Indicates whether a typeface has a serif or not. A serif is a small horizontal line attached to the characters.
Serif Fonts
Characters have serifs.
Usually easier to read on the printed page.
Courier is a serif typeface.
Sans Serif Fonts
Characters do not have serifs.
Usually easier to read on the computer screen.
Arial is a sans serif typeface.
