Homework #1 -- Due: September 20
Purpose:
Demonstrate basic knowledge of HTML concepts and relationship to browser software. Create content and prepare it for online publication.
Note:
Documents for this assignment may be prepared entirely offline. They do not have to be moved to the Shrike server or posted on the Web in any way (though
you are welcome to do so if you wish).
Part 1. Web Site Review, written in HTML (20 pts.)
- Access the World Wide Web.
- Choose a Web site that interests you.
- Prepare a 1-2 page review of the Web site. Briefly discuss the following:
- What is the URL of the site?
- Why did you pick this particular site to review?
- What is the purpose of the site? Does it entertain, inform, challenge, sell,...?
- What is good about the site?
- What is bad about the site?
- How would you make the site better?
- Using your text editor, put your review into HTML.
- Save the HTML version of your review as an HTML file.
- Print the HTML source code of your review.
Part 2. Your Review as Displayed by a Browser (10 pts.)
- Open your review HTML file with your favorite browser.
- Print your review as your browser displays it.
Part 3. Document Your Observations (20 pts.)
- Prepare a document containing the following:
- The name and version of the browser you used in Part 2.
- Your observations about HTML and the way your browser displayed it.
- Print your document.
Extra Credit (5 pts.)
- Open your review HTML file in a second browser.
- Print your review as this second broswer displays it, as you did in Part 2.
- To your observations document from Part 3, add a section identifying this second browser and any observations you make regarding the differences between it and the one you used in Part 2.
Turn In
You will need to turn in the three printed documents from parts 1-3. To receive extra credit, you must turn in the additional printed document and include the extra section in your Part 3 document.
