The National Society of Collegiate Scholars

Officer Meeting Wednesday September 8, 2003

Meeting Called to Order by President at 1:15pm.

Last Years Events
• Last Year’s Events were brought up to help point out what worked well last year and what improvements can be made for this year.

Community Service Projects
• Kara then passed out a paper with a list of some community service projects such as Life source blood drive, volunteering for St.Vincent DePaul Parish, Kaboom (a program designed to build playgrounds) and Habitat for Humanity.
• We have decided that it is a good idea to have at least one service project per month.
• Make a difference day was discussed and Shayna is going to find out the date for it. Suggestions are welcome!
• Jibran suggested we do a volunteer service day CTI every month.
• We decided that it would be a good idea to planned 2 community service events planned for October and November before the Induction Ceremony so that newly indicted NSCS members can sign up at induction!
• There is going to be Clothing Drive in November.
College Bowl
• College Bowl was such a success last year that we will be doing it again! Laura G. is in charge and if anyone would like to help she would gladly appreciate it! It will be held fall quarter this year and we will be recruiting for it at the involvement fair Sunday Sept.14. We will be giving out $50 gist certificates as prizes!
Induction Ceremony
• The induction ceremony will be October 7th. We need NSCS members to help greet people and sign people in, so if you have any friends in NSCS that could help out it would be great!
• Officers need to be at the student center at 5pm to help set up. People will be arriving at 6:30pm.
• We discussed not having a keynote speaker this year and using that time to give out scholarships (1 $500, and 4 $100) awarded to those NSCS inductees that applied for the merit scholarship through the national board. We also discussed maybe having an alumnus come and speak instead.
• The distinguished members are going to be Locia Dettori, Kimberly Craft, and Matthew Dintzner.
• We have decided that it is a good idea to read off all the names of new inductees at induction.
Partnering with other Chicago NSCS Chapters
• We have discussed partnering with other Chicago Chapters. We think it would be a good idea to host an event with the other Chicago NSCS chapters such as having Jesse Jackson Jr. the Illinois NSCS rep. to come and speak at DePaul or maybe doing a social event such as seeing Alfred Hitcock’s “Psycho” in November.
• Another good idea was to do a service project with the other Chicago NSCS chapters.
• Laura T. handed out the new budget for our chapter this year!
Officer Transition
• Having new officers take over in mid April under supervision of the old officers was recommended for this year’s end of the year officer transition.
NSCS Awareness
• We need to make NSCS more visible this year and more people aware. One suggestion was that we give away free food sometime during finals week this year. Any other suggestions are welcome!
Meetings
• Meetings will be set at 9:15pm every 2nd Monday of the month. Our first NSCS Chapter meeting will be Oct. 13th.
Contact Info
• Please send Laura T. your contact information including your address, phone number, SS#, Student ID#, and email address at Tickie22@hotmail.com if you have not done so already!
Meeting Ends 2:22pm
