Group Counseling

You Don't Have to Face Life's Challenges Alone

In an effort to better serve you, we are offering group counseling to DePaul students.  Without compromising your privacy, you can learn more about yourself and gain support from others.  All are welcome to take advantage of this opportunity regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability or ethnicity; and we are committed to providing you with the best services possible. A variety of groups are offered at both the Lincoln Park Campus and the Loop Campus for students who may be struggling with specific issues (e.g. grief/loss, self-esteem), or would like to understand more about how they tend to relate to others in general.  Group counseling can be particularly effective for a broad array of concerns.  It not only offers students an opportunity to get support and feedback from others, but also to learn more about themselves in a unique and stimulating way.

Be on the lookout for these and other groups that will be forming throughout the school year:

 Meeting the Challenge of Relationships

This group is for students who would like to better understand and improve the quality of their relation ships--with friends, family and significant others.  Students may explore what they would like to get from their relationships, how early family experiences impact their current relationship patterns, how they cope with changing levels of intimacy, etc.  Members can use the interpersonal interaction of the group to learn about themselves, try new behaviors, and clarify confusing feelings within a supportive, yet challenging and growth producing atmosphere.

A Women's Group: Finding Your Voice & Empowering Yourself

This is a time-limited group for young women who would like to explore the origins of their views about themselves and current factors that shape and maintain their views of self.  The group will address feelings of low self-worth, difficulties being assertive and stating opinions, and seeking approval from others.  The group will provide a supportive, safe atmosphere that will challenge members to examine their style of interacting with others.

 Student Mother Support Group

Conducted in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, this group will address the triumphs and challenges of student mothers at DePaul.  The group will facilitate support from others in balancing school and children, creating a space for yourself, balancing time and stress, sharing resources and will provide participants an opportunity to re-energize.

Enhancing Feminine Self-Image

This group is for women students who struggle with symptoms such as bingeing and purging, overeating followed by fasting or over-exercising, and the misuse of laxatives and diuretics.  The group will provide members with the opportunity to understand the dynamics and roots of these concerns, as well as things that perpetuate the problem.  Group members will grow and learn from others who are dealing with similar issues in a safe and confidential environment.

Sobering Lifestyles

Difficulty expressing/dealing with feelings, apathy, boredom, peer pressure, little support from friends or family, loneliness, isolation and self-esteem issues are just some of the reasons why individuals develop excessive use of alcohol or other drugs.  The purpose of this group is to provide support for those individuals desiring to make some lifestyle changes regarding prior excessive use of alcohol and/or other drugs.  This group is open to all considering or desiring to modify their current behavior or maintain positive lifestyle changes.  Members of the group will work together to explore issues that trigger excessive use, as well as learn new coping behaviors.

GLBT Group

This group will provide a safe and affirmative environment for gay, lesbian, and bisexual students to address issues of common concern.  Areas of focus will be generated by group participants and my include coming out, dealing with relationships, spirituality, stress management and wellness, facilitating personal growth and self-acceptance as a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender person.
