   INSTRUCTIONS on #54:

   • Instead of guessing the formula for Sn, derive the formula (i.e., closed form) by using the characteristic equation method.  Show all your work.
   • For the inductive proof, as you may notice, there are two cases in the basic step (n = 1 and 2).  You also have to use strong mathematical induction.
