ASSIGNMENTS: These include both individual and group projects
ASSIGNMENT #1--INTERVIEW PROJECT: 15%. Students will design a series of questions for use in interview project: The assignment is to interview a woman of color who is an intellectual, writer, educator, artist or the like and relate the interview to our discussions in class. REPORTS on INTERVIEW PROJECT are due in class the third meeting, September 28; these are to be a 3 page (750 words) written reflection on the points of the interview relevant to the course discussions. Students are also to turn in anyinterview notes (as taken) or a tape, if made (do not transcribe either notes or taped interview).
ASSIGNMENT #2--MIDQUARTER WRITING ASSIGNMENT: 15%. The assignment will be handed out. MIDTERM assignment is due by the end of class.
ASSIGNMENT #3--FILM PROJECT: 20% (5% per film journal). Students will watch each film prior to the week when they will be discussed. On the day assigned for the film discussion, students are to bring a film journal that draws connections between the film and the course readings; these will form the basis for discussion in class. Films include Eve's Bayou, I Like it Like That, Joy Luck Club, Smoke Signals.
ASSIGNMENT #4--GROUP ACTION PROJECT: 25%. Students will be assigned to groups who will then research their topic both individually and together. Results of their research will be presented to the class on the final day of class, November 17.
ASSIGNMENT #5--REFLECTIVE ESSAY as final assignment: 15%. The final assignment is due on Wednesday, 11/25, by noon in Fullerton 206 (Philosophy Dept.). Students have full responsibility for this assignment reaching the instructor and should always keep a hard copy and (if used) several copies of the computer file on a hard disk and a floppy (or Zip) disk for safety. Students can also turn in the assignment via email to mlarrabe@wppost.depaul.edu--submit as a regular email (copy & paste your document from wordprocessing to email) rather than as an attachment.
Oral presentation on one reading, participation & attendance: 10%
One undocumented absence is permitted; further absences will result in a grade reduction of 0.10 (where A is 4.00) from the final grade.
There will be several required short writing assignments, ungraded.
