Final Exam Study Guide

Spring Quarter, 2001

About the final. The final will be comprised of multiple choice, true-false-maybe, short answer, and essay/diagram. The exam will be about 90% post-midterm content and about 10% pre-midterm content. As with the midterm, you can create a hand-written, 1 page (single sided, 8.5”x11”) cheat sheet containing any notes or diagrams you wish. You will have a full three hours to complete the final, though I’ll write it as a 1.5 hour exam.

For the final exam, you should be able to:

  1. Describe in terms of throughput, application, operation, cabling system and maximum segment length and diagram the following network technologies:
    1. Token Ring
    2. Ethernet (shared 10, 100, switched 10, 100, full-duplex, and gig)
    3. FDDI
    4. X.25
    5. ATM on a LAN or WAN
    6. Interconnectivity between network types, including the Internet
  2. PRI vs BRI ISDN vs T1
  3. Select the best cabling system for the problem/application described in a problem.
  4. Select the best method for interconnectivity between locations (e.g, point to point T1, frame relay, PRI ISDN, ATM, FDDI)
  5. Select the best networking technology for a problem given.
  6. Explain why you would select one technology over the other—as it applies to the problem (not just a generic list of pros and cons)
  7. Describe the DNS process
  8. OSI model—all layers
  9. IP and how it works; IPv6
  10. Interconnect a PBX with a LAN
