Internet Resources for Guidance Counsellors
The contents of this page are meant to act as starting points
for internet exploration for guidance counsellors. This
page is by no means definitive or exhaustive. If you know
of other links that would be helpful, please feel
free to mail me
the URL or site name and I'll be happy to add the resource
to this listing.
On-Line Job Listings
- Careermosaic.com Great for technical and professional job listings. Search engine allows you to select
by profession, location, salary, and several other parameters.
- Online Career Center Perhaps the best on-line resource for high-school and college graduates looking for jobs. OCC holds
on-line career fairs, sponsors regional (human!) career fairs, and contains a wealth of information about planning a career and getting the job you want. OCC also allows you to send a text version of your resume for inclusion in their database, at no charge.
- Chicago Tribute Career
Center This site houses many of the ads posted in the current and previous two weeks of the Sunday Tribune's Employment section. Users can search or browse the ads. Note that inclusion in the on-line version is at the discretion of the
advertiser, so not every ad placed in the paper is listed on line.
- Yahoo's Chicago
Employment Center An alternative to the Tribune for local jobs,
Yahoo's site allows employers to post and update job openings free of charge.
On-Line College/University Admissions Office/Applications
Commercial On-Line Application Providers
- XAP Company A
software developer specializing in creating on-line university
admissions applications. Check here to see if the college of your
choice supports on-line application.
- E-App Corporation.
Another commercial provider of on-line applications. This
link takes you to
technical and community colleges that have contracted with E-app
to provide on-line application service. This
link takes
you to undergraduate universities that have contracted with E-app
to provide on-line application service.
- Links to universities around the world.
College/University Admissions Information
- Admissions Offices This Yahoo page lists all known
Universities with admissions information on the web. This page is
updated almost daily as more and more universities add web services, so
check here often even if you don't find what you need the first time.
Financial Aid Information
- One-Stop Shopping for college financial aid information. Includes links to college aid offices,
companies and organizations with financial aid information and services,
grants, loans and scholarship programs, and regional financial aid resources.
On-Line Entrance Exam Information
-
SAT Online registration for the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Requires
a credit card at the time of registration to pay exam fee. Check
the E-app site (see above) in the near future for GRE, ACT, LSAT, and MCAT
exam registration as well.
-
Use this Yahoo site as a jumping off point for information about testing
and testing companies, including SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, GMAT, TOEFL, and
test preparation companies and guides (including some pretty humorous
home-made guides by Internet users).
How to Search the Web Effectively
This page is just the "tip of the iceberg" with regard to information
on the Internet. I found all of these resources in about two hours
of focused searching. Finding things on the web requires a search
engine. My favorite starting point for searches is:
www.yahoo.com. Yahoo is well
organized and fast. And, best of all, if you don't find what
you are looking for on Yahoo, you can scroll to the bottom of the
screen and issue your same search using a different search engine.
