Midterm Review

Format

The midterm will be comprehensive. Review the following lecture notes:

Logic
Set Theory
Relational Algebra I
Relational Algebra II (except the Outer Join section)
SQL I
SQL II (Arithmetic and Aggregate/Built-in Function sections only)

Also review quiz#1 and quiz#2 (solutions are available). Remember that readings from the text are included in the lecture notes. You should review these readings. The practice problems posted in the Announcements section of the class webpage may help as well. The midterm tutorial practice problems should also be reviewed. The solutions are available.

The exam will be ninety minutes but it is possible to complete all questions in 60 minutes. The exam will be divided into two sections.

Technical:
This section will be similar to quiz #1, and #2. Note that in addition you will have questions on SQL (see lecture notes above).
Descriptive:
Be prepared to discuss basic concepts and terminology from Relational Algebra and SQL. To aid your preparation review the meaning of the following terms:
- Relation
- Attribute
- Tuple
- Table
- Column
- Row
- Primary key
- Closure
- Union compatible
- DML
- DDL
- Relationally complete
These terms are defined in the lecture notes and/or the readings.
