Schedule/Week 3:

WEEK 3: Using People for Research (part 1)

In this class, we begin our consideration of using people as the focus of research. We
begin with a discussion of question formulation and practice writing questions
                        appropriate for questionnaires or interviews.

We then discuss the most popular forms of quantitative research, surveys and opinion
polls. Issues to be covered include sampling, questionnaire administration, and
how
to evaluate the survey research of others.

We conclude with a discussion of what students have learned thus far from the
literature review process and review the current status of research questions.

Presentations on survey research by: Ron (sampling), Mary Ann S. (question
formulation), Kathleen (questionnaire development), and Barb (surveys by Internet).

Homework: Look again at your problem-based learning grid; add and delete
"hunches"/hypotheses. Select a hypothesis you might pursue and describe in writing
how you might conduct a survey or opinion poll to investigate it. Keep notes about
what issues arise for you as you plan this possible research.

Read True, chapters 5 and 6, and keep notes about any questions you have.
