Large Language Model AI software such as ChatGPT
Sadly, there are many fine and useful assignments I will no longer include as part of courses because they
can no longer be fairly graded. This is the new reality. Our best students are the loosers. We will do our
best to adjust.
UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED for an assignment, here are the current class rules for using ChatGPT-syle AI
software on assignments:
- You are free to use ChatGPT (or similar software) as a research tool, similarly to how you
might use Wikipedia and Google search for research articles.
- You must note that you have used ChatGPT (or other) as a tool to
help with your assignment.
- DePaul University considers LLM output to be equivalent to the work
of a human author, and you must attributed the source of your text to
the appropirate LLM. Otherwise you are guilty of plagiarism.
- You are NEVER, EVER allowed to directly electronically copy text from LLM
output and submit or post it as part of an assignment without FULL
ATTRIBUTION to the AI author. You must type in your own
text, but you can include, in your original work, concepts based on your
LLM-backed research.
- For any submissions that might have LLM content,
all or part of the grading will always be based solely on whether I
like they style of your work, purely at my discretion, and this part of the grade
trumps all other parts of the grading rubric. And, please note that I
have a singular dislike for the style of writing that is similar to what
LLMs produce. I specifically reserve this grading right and am the sole
judge of my preferences, with final grades, determined by me, ranging
from 0 - 100%.
