Assignment 2

Experiment Participation and Discussion

This assignment is intended to demonstrate how the internet can be used for experimental research and hone your analytical skills for describing and interpreting an experiment.

You will participate in a demonstration experiment hosted by the University of Mississippi’s PsychExperiments project (http://psychexps.olemiss.edu).  In a later assignment you will write a lab report for the experiment you participate in, so pay attention to how the experiment works as you do it.

Begin by pointing your web browser at the PsychExperiments web site: http://psychexps.olemiss.edu   You can type (or cut and paste) this address into the “address” window of your web browser.  Click on “Participate in Experiments” to begin.  The assigned experiment can be found by clicking on “Lab Experiments” and then “Be a Juror.”

If the experiment does not begin within a few seconds, you may need to download and install the Shockwave plug-in on your computer.  Go back to the PsychExperiments home page and click on “What you need” for help.

Read the informed consent document and follow the instructions to begin the experiment.  You may provide your name if you wish, or use the name “Guest” – it is up to you.  When the “List of projects” screen comes up, select “An interested person.”  Follow the on-screen instructions to do the experiment.  (Press return after typing in your age on the page that asks for it; otherwise the instructions are quite clear about what to do at each step.)

After completing the experiment, answer the following questions and turn in a hard copy in class on the day this assignment is due.  You can consult the “Instructor’s Page” at PsychExperiments to help you figure out the answers if you need to.

  1. What was the hypothesis of the experiment?

  2. What was the independent variable?

  3. How many levels did the independent variable have?

  4. List the levels of the IV:

  5. Was the IV manipulated within-subjects or between-subjects?

  6. What was the dependent variable?

  7. What type of scale was the DV measured on? (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio?)

  8. What kind of statistical analysis or analyses would you use for the data from this experiment?
