Activity 14: Final Project Preview |
Objectives
1. Use the quantitative skills you have developed to report social data.
2. Learn how to use PowerPoint to make a simple presentation.
3. Begin or continue work on your final project.
Assignment
Review the instructions for the Final Project linked from the course schedule.
Also review the instructions for Homework 5, in which you practiced doing analyses
like those you will use in your final project, and review the newspaper article
from Homework 5 which serves as a useful model for what a good project might look like.
Your
task in this activity is as follows:
- Meet with your group for the Final Project
- Select a topic (if you have not
already done so)
- Go to the Statistical Abstracts of the U.S. (linked from the QRC home page)
- Find one or more tables of data that you can use in your final project
- Use the data from one or more of those tables to create an X-Y plot
and add a linear trend line to create a linear model of the data
- Use the equation from your linear model to make a prediction outside the
range of your data
- Create a 4-slide PowerPoint (or StarOffice Impress) presentation as follows:
- A title slide with your group member names and the tentative title
of your final project, indicating your topic
- A statement of the question that you are trying to answer with the
data you created the X-Y plot from
- The X-Y plot you created, clearly labeled and including the trend line
- A statement of a prediction you made using the equation from your
linear model, and an evaluation of how confident you are in that
prediction
You should consult the PowerPoint tips linked from the "Useful Links" page on the
course schedule for tips on creating a good presentation.
