Research and Documentation Online by Diana Hacker
This excellent online handbook includes guidelines for citing and listing print and electronic sources and sample papers for works in the Humanities (MLA style), Social Sciences (APA), History and other disciplines/fields (Chicago Manual of Style), and the Sciences (CBE).

The MLA Style
This is the web site of the Modern Language Association (MLA), with information about the MLA Handbook and MLA Style Guide, as well as the "Frequently-Asked Questions" pages on MLA documentation style and page set-up requirements for research papers, theses, and dissertations.

APA Editorial Style Guide
This link will take you to the web site of the American Psychological Association (APA) page outlining the APA documentation format for research papers and theses.

Chicago/Turabian Documentation
From the Writing Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, this explanatory site, like most online CMS guidelines, currently refers to the 14th rather than the recent 15th edition, but the explanations are very clear.

Council of Science Editors
Formerly known as the Council of Biology Editors (CBE), the Council's official style guide is Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers. Diana Hacker's well-regarded Research and Documentation handbook covers research and paper format guidelines for writing in the sciences.

Citing Electronic Resources from Online! A Reference Guide to Using Internet Sources
by Andrew Harnack and Eugene Kleppinger: This link will take you to the "Citation Styles" chapter, which covers APA, CBE, Chicago Style, and MLA formats.

The Columbia Guide to Online Style
This site is a companion site to the print resource The Columbia Guide to Online Style, published by Columbia University Press. The web site offers information and guidelines for using and citing electronic sources, with examples for Humanities format and Scientific format. The site is linked to other pages that describe the book in detail.

The Elements of Style Online
This link will take you to the online version of the first edition of Elements of Style, by Strunk & White.

Paraphrasing, Summarizing, and Using Quotations
This online handout is from Purdue University's Online Writing Center (OWL). This handout also has a sample essay for summarizing. Please note Purdue's terms of use before you use the exercise.

The Passive Engineer

Using Sources: Paraphrase
This handout is from Purdue University's Online Writing Lab (OWL). It defines what paraphrasing is, offers guidelines and tips for paraphrasing, and includes a link to paraphrasing exercises and sample answers.
