The
West Humboldt Park Family and Community Development Council was formed
in January 1992 as an organization that represents approximately eighty
community based organizations and neighborhood groups throughout the West
Humboldt area to monitor, coordinate, and implement programs, projects
and activities relating to family, community and economic development.
The West Humboldt Park Family
and Community Development Council was given birth by the Orr School Network,
which was created by the Community Relations Department at Bank of America
(then Continental Bank). The idea of the network was to offer an
opportunity for the principals of the area elementary schools and high
school individually.
As the group progressed,
they began to realize that a number of other problems arose with which
they had to deal that related to family, community and the lack of economic
growth within West Humboldt Park. Thus, the West Humboldt Park Development
Council was founded in order to deal with the non-academic issues and to
allow the Orr School Network to achieve the goals and objectives originally
set for their group. The West Humboldt Park Family and Community Development
Council also had the charge of acting as a catalyst to promote a networking
mechanism that connects community based orginizations with each other as
well as the community residents.
The Development Council's
job was not only to bring resources to the community, but to also
make certain that community based organizations began to work with each
other to provide those same resources to area residents.
