SOURCE FOR OCCURRENCE IN ECUADOR: This species is common along the Pacific slope of Ecuador from Esmeraldas to Huaquillas. References for its occurrence in the area are common (e.g., Eigenmann, 1918; Eigenmann, 1922; Ovchynnyk, 1971; Glodek, 1978; Ferraris, 2007). |

RANGE ECUADOR: Northern Ecuador (Eigenmann, 1922), Guayas basin and possibly other localities west of the Andes (Glodek, 1978) such as Zamora River (Ovchynnyk, 1971). |
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: Peru (Ortega & Vari, 1986; Ortega et al., 2011), southern Colombia (Eigenmann, 1922; Maldonado et al., 2005). |
COLLECTIONS IN ECUADOR: |
MAXIMUM SIZE: 11.1 cm (Eigenmann, 1918). |
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Trichomycterus taenia is distinguished from other species in western Ecuador by an elongate body shape, its relatively small size, a median stripe extending laterally along the length of the body, and conical teeth (Glodek, 1978). |
ECOLOGY: Trichomycterus taenia is a small, ecologically important fish that feeds on small aquatic insects (Maldonado et al, 2005). It is found primarily in small creeks of low flow with rock or sandy bottoms that possess abundant submerged vegetation and are shaded by trees (Maldonado et al, 2005). |
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE: This species is not of economic importance. |
