Belonidae - Strongylura fluviatilis (Regan, 1903)



SOURCE FOR OCCURRENCE IN ECUADOR: Barriga (2012) and Jimenez-Prado et al. (2015).
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Regan, C.T. 1903. Descriptions of new South-American fishes in the collection of the British Museum. Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 7) v. 12 (no. 72) (art. 64):621-630.
TYPE SPECIMENS:
TAXONOMIC STATUS: Valid (Eschmeyer and Fricke, 2020).
RANGE ECUADOR: Reported from the Santiago-Cayapas and Esmeraldas drainages (Jimenez-Prado et al., 2015).
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: Colombia (Jimenez-Prado et al., 2015).
COLLECTIONS IN ECUADOR:
MAXIMUM SIZE: 517 mm total length but common to 400 mm (Jimenez-Prado et al., 2015).
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Very different from all other freshwater fishes in the region because of its greatly elongated body and mandibles.
ECOLOGY: Seems to be a species that tolerates some salinity and can be found in brackish waters. Predatory, feeds on small aquatic invertebrates and fishes (Jimenez-Prado et al., 2015).
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE: Not abundant enough to be of significant economic importance although it is valued as a food fish.
CONSERVATION STATUS: Its status in Ecuador is unknown although it is valued as a food fish by locals (Jimenez-Prado et al., 2015).
