RANGE ECUADOR: Rio Verde drainage (and likely rivers north of the Rio Verde) and Santiago-Cayapas drainages in northwestern Ecuador (Jimenez et al., 2015). |
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: Pacific drainages in Panama and Colombia (Eigenmann, 1922; Fishbase, 2013). |

MAXIMUM SIZE: 130 mm SL (Fishbase, 2013). |
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: This is a small to medium size tetra, that possesses a long anal fin and can have a relatively deep body anteriorly. A dark blotch is often present on the side of the body. Maldonado-Ocampo et al. (2005) list the following meristic counts for Colombian specimens: 5-8 gill rakers on the the upper branch and 10-12 in the lower branch of the first gill arch; dorsal fin i-9; anal fin iv-v, 40-51; 71-80 lateral line scales; 16-20 scales along a dorsal series. |
ECOLOGY: Gery (1977) indicates that species in this genus tend to have scale eating habits. Maldonado-Ocampo et al. (2005) list the following items from the stomachs of specimens collected in the San Juan River (Puerto Pizario) of Colombia: shrimp, scales, terrestrial insects in the family Libelulidae, worms, plant material (seeds), and aquatic beetles from the family Helmidae. |
