ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Peters, W.C.H. 1859. Eine neue vom Herrn Jagor im atlantischen Meere gefangene Art der Gattung Leptocephalus, und uber einige andere neue Fische des Zoologischen Museums. Monatsberichte der Koniglichen Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin 1859: 411-413.
TYPE SPECIMENS:
TAXONOMIC STATUS: Valid (Eschmeyer and Fricke, 2020).
RANGE ECUADOR: Introduced into Santiago-Cayapas, Atacames, Sua, Mompiche, and Guayas drainages (Jimenez-Prado et al., 2015). May occur in other drainages as well.
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: Native to northern South America, Venezuela, Guayana, Trinidad & Tobago. Widely introduced into tropical ecosystems throughout the world (Eschmeyer and Fricke, 2020).
COLLECTIONS IN ECUADOR:
MAXIMUM SIZE: 60 mm SL (Jimenez-Prado et al., 2015).
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: The wild version of the common aquarium guppy, this species can be identified by the bright orange, yellow, blue, green and irridescent colors on the sides of the body and tails of males.
ECOLOGY: Very little is known specifically on its ecology in Ecuador. Likely feeds on small aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton, and other organic material (Jimenez-Prado et al., 2015). Has a high reproductive rate given that its a live-bearing fish.
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE: Introduced species very popular globally as an aquarium fish.
CONSERVATION STATUS: This is a non-native species in Ecuador so its conservation status in the country is not applicable.
