Heptapteridae - Pimelodella elongata (Gunther, 1860)



SOURCE FOR OCCURRENCE IN ECUADOR: This species occurs in the Guayas and Esmeraldas basins of western Ecuador and there are many references for its occurrence in the area (e.g., Eigenmann, 1922; Ovchynnyk, 1971; Glodek, 1978; Ferraris, 2007).
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Gunther, A. 1860. Third list of cold-blooded vertebrata collected by Mr. Fraser in Ecuador. Proceedings of the General Meetings for Scientific Business of the Zoological Society of London 1860 (pt 2): 233-240, Pl. 10.
TYPE SPECIMENS:
TAXONOMIC STATUS: Valid (Eschmeyer and Fricke, 2011).
RANGE ECUADOR: Guayas and Esmeraldas river drainages.
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: None.
COLLECTIONS IN ECUADOR:
MAXIMUM SIZE: 16.9 cm TL (Fishbase, 2011).
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: This species is distinguished from the other species in the genus in this region, P. modestus, by having the upper caudal-fin lobe longer than the lower caudal-fin lobe and by lacking a lateral dark brown stripe (Glodek, 1978).
ECOLOGY: NA.
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE: Not of economic importance.
CONSERVATION STATUS: NA, although the species is not heavily exploited as a food species.
