SOURCE FOR OCCURRENCE IN ECUADOR: This species is common at higher elevations in the Guayas River drainage. At lower elevations it is replaced by Lebiasina bimaculata. There are many references for its occurrence in the area (e.g., Eigenmann, 1922; Ovchynnyk, 1971; Gery, 1977; Glodek, 1978; Laaz & Torres, 2010; Jimenez et al., 2015).

TYPE SPECIMENS:
TAXONOMIC STATUS: Valid (Eschmeyer and Fricke, 2011) although previously known as Piabucina aureoguttata.
RANGE ECUADOR: Western slopes of the Andes (Eschmeyer, 2011); Guayas basin (Laaz & Torres 2010).
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: None.
COLLECTIONS IN ECUADOR:
MAXIMUM SIZE: 12.8 cm SL (Fishbase, 2011).
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Lebiasina aureoguttata is distinguished from other species in the genus occurring in western Ecuador by a dark band from the upper angle of the gill-opening to the adipose fin, a series of spots along the mid flanks, a narrow light band between them, and a narrow vertical spot at base of the caudal fin (Eigenmann, 1922).
ECOLOGY: Lebiasina aureoguttata is known in Ecuador as the “huaija de montania” and is a medium, ecologically important, omnivorous fish.
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE: Not economically important.
