Loricariidae - Hypostomus annectens (Regan, 1904)



SOURCE FOR OCCURRENCE IN ECUADOR: There are many references for the occurrenc of this species in the area (e.g., Eigenmann, 1922; Ovchynnyk, 1971; Glodek, 1978; Isbrücker, 1980; Barriga, 1994; Ferraris, 2007; Eschmeyer, 2011).
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Regan, C.T. 1904. A monograph of the fishes of the family Loricariidae. Transactions of the Zoological Society of London 17 (pt 3, no. 1):191-350, Pls. 9-21.
TYPE SPECIMENS:
TAXONOMIC STATUS: Valid (Eschmeyer and Fricke, 2011).
RANGE ECUADOR: Pacific coastal rivers of Northwestern Ecuador such as the Cayapas Basin (Ferraris, 2007); Esmeraldas river (Barriga, 1994).
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: Rio Patia drainage in western Colombia (Eigenmann, 1922).
COLLECTIONS IN ECUADOR:
MAXIMUM SIZE: 28 cm (Isbrücker, 1980).
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Hypostomus annectens differs from other loricariids by the following characters: interopercle with four short, stiff spines, seven bony plates between dorsal and adipose fins, twenty-eight lateral bony plates (Glodek, 1978).
ECOLOGY: Hypostomus annectens, known in Ecuador as the “guacuco”, is a small, ecologically important detritivorous fish (Barriga, 1994).
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE: Not economically important.
