Loricariidae - Chaetostoma marginatum (Regan, 1904) |
 |
SOURCE FOR OCCURRENCE IN ECUADOR: There are many references for its occurrence in western Ecuador (e.g., Regan, 1904; Eigenmann, 1922; Ovchynnyk, 1971; Glodek, 1978; Isbrücker, 1980; Barriga, 1989; Barriga, 1994; Ferraris, 2007; Laaz & Torres, 2010; Eschmeyer, 2011; Lujan et al., 2015c, Jimenez et al., 2015.). |
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Regan, C. T. 1904. A monograph of the fishes of the family Loricariidae. Transactions of the Zoological Society of London 17:191-350, Pls. 9-21. |
TYPE SPECIMENS: |
TAXONOMIC STATUS: Valid (Eschmeyer and Fricke, 2011). |
RANGE ECUADOR: Although it has been previously reported in the Guayas drainage (Laaz & Torres, 2010; Jimenez et al., 2015), this species is likely restricted to drainages north of the Esmeraldas drainage (Lujan et al., 2015c). Chaetostoma in the Esmeraldas drainage south are likely C. bifurcum (Lujan et al., 2015c) |
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: Colombia (Maldonado et al, 2005). |
COLLECTIONS IN ECUADOR: |
MAXIMUM SIZE: 19 cm (Isbrücker, 1980). |
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Chaetostoma marginatum differs from other species by the following characters: presence of four to seven spines on the interopercle, body depth greater than 5 times in SL, 24-25 lateral bony plates, and the presence of small yellow spots on the head (Glodek, 1978). |
ECOLOGY: Chaetostoma marginatum, known in Ecuador as the “campeche guaña”, is a medium, ecologically important detritivorous fish. It feeds on algae with its villiform teeth (Barriga, 1994). It can be found under medium-sized rocks in fast-running, relatively pristine rivers that lack significant contamination (Maldonado et al, 2005). |
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE: This species is not of economic importance. |
CONSERVATION STATUS: NA, although the species is not heavily exploited as a food species. |
