Characidae - Brycon oligolepis Regan, 1913



SOURCE FOR OCCURRENCE IN ECUADOR: There are many references for its occurrence in the area (e.g., Eigenmann, 1922; Bohlke, 1958; Howes, 1982; Barriga, 1991).
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Regan, C.T. 1913. The fishes of the San Juan River, Colombia. Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 8) v. 12(71):462-473.
TYPE SPECIMENS:
TAXONOMIC STATUS: Valid (Eschmeyer and Fricke, 2011).
RANGE ECUADOR: Esmeraldas Province (Howes, 1982).
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: Pacific slope of Colombia (Howes, 1982).
COLLECTIONS IN ECUADOR:
MAXIMUM SIZE: 24.1 cm SL (Fishbase, 2011).
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: This is a silvery, stream-lined, predatory fish that resembles other species of Brycon. It typically has iv25-iv28 anal fin elements while B. alburnus typically has iv28-iv30 anal fin elements and B. dentex typically has iv31-iv32 anal fin elements (Howes, 1982).
ECOLOGY: Larger predatory species.
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE: Species in this genus are exploited as food fishes in western Ecuador.
CONSERVATION STATUS: NA, although this species is heavily exploited as a food species.
