Gobiidae - Awaous transandeanus (Gunther 1861)



SOURCE FOR OCCURRENCE IN ECUADOR: This species occurs in rivers of the Guayas basin and rivers of Esmeraldas province. There are many references for its occurrence in the area (e.g., Eigenmann, 1922; Ovchynnyk, 1971; Barriga, 1989; Barriga, 1994; Laaz & Torres, 2010).

TYPE SPECIMENS:
TAXONOMIC STATUS: Valid (Eschmeyer and Fricke, 2011).
RANGE ECUADOR: Chanchan River and Chimbo River in the Guayas basin; Esmeraldas River (Ovchynnyk, 1971).
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: Pacific Slope from Mexico to Peru (Eschmeyer, 2011).
COLLECTIONS IN ECUADOR:
MAXIMUM SIZE: 23.4 cm (Eigenmann, 1922).
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Awaous trasandeanus is distinguished from other species ocurring in Western Ecuador by a subcylindrical anterior body shape and a compressed posterior body shape, a long subterminal mouth, head and cheeks lacking scales, two dorsal fins with the anal fin being very similar to the second dorsal fin, caudal fin rounded, yellow-green body color, sides of body with dark spots or long bars, and spotting on head (Barriga, 1989).
ECOLOGY: Awaous trasandeanus is known in Ecuador as the "lameplato". It is a small, ecologically important detritivorous fish. It is a common species that occurs in large numbers in coastal rivers close to brackish waters and lagoons on the edge of the Andes Mountains (Barriga, 1989).
