Soleidae - Achirus klunzingeri (Steindachner, 1880)



SOURCE FOR OCCURRENCE IN ECUADOR: This species is common along the Pacific slope of Ecuador. References for its occurrence in the area include Eigenmann (1922), Ovchynnyk (1971), Rubio (1988), Fischer et al. (1995), Massay & Massay (1999), Laaz et al. (2009), Laaz & Torres (2010), Eschmeyer (2011), etc.
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Steindachner, F. 1880. Zur Fisch-Fauna des Cauca und der Flüsse bei Guayaquil. Denkschriften der Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Classe der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien v. 42: 55-104, Pls. 1-9.
TYPE SPECIMENS:
TAXONOMIC STATUS: Valid (Eschmeyer and Fricke, 2011).
RANGE ECUADOR: Occurs off the coast of Ecuador, in the Guayas River drainage ( Laaz & Torres, 2010) and in the Chone River in Manabi Province (Eigenmann, 1922).
RANGE OUTSIDE OF ECUADOR: Panama to Tumbes, Peru (Rubio, 1988).
COLLECTIONS IN ECUADOR:
MAXIMUM SIZE: 27 cm (Rubio, 1988).
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Achirus klunzingeri differs from other species in the genus by the following characters: Oval body form, compressed dorso-ventrally, brown color, scales on the head except around the mouth, small teeth, smooth anterior process of the maxillary, rounded border of the caudal fin (Laaz et al., 2009).
ECOLOGY: Achirus scutum is known in Ecuador as the “guardaboya”. It is a medium-sized, ecologically important carnivorous fish that feeds on small crustaceans. It is generally found over sand and mud and can tolerate both saltwater and freshwater conditions (Rubio, 1988).
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE: This species has some economic importance (Rubio, 1988).
CONSERVATION STATUS: NA, although this species is exploited as a food fish.
