NOTASULGA, Alabama (AP) -- The survivors of the
Tuskegee, Alabama, syphilis study want an apology
from President Clinton.
The U.S. Public Health Service conducted
the study, tracking the progression of syphilis in
black men starting in the 1940s. During the study
more than 600 black men went untreated for the deadly
disease, even after it was found that antibiotics
were an effective treatment.
Fred Gray, the attorney for the group, said 14 of
the participants are still alive and will demand an
apology and an audience with the president. Gray said
there has never been any expression of remorse or
regret from the government.
