Title: The Issue of Stigma in Communities

This panel will discuss issues of stigma in the communities we work with. Specifically, what are the negative stereotypes associated with these communities, how do they affect the way we as community psychologists perceive them, and what are their implications for interventions and treatment? Additionally, we will discuss our roles and methods in breaking these negative stereotypes and we will address how to sensitively bridge the gap between professionals and community members where these types of stigma are concerned. Panel members will discuss this issue as it relates to four topics: 1) individuals with chronic illness, 2) individuals with disabilities, 3) individuals with alcohol and drug abuse, and 4) individuals recovering from addiction.
