Title: Establishing a Teen Council: Challenges and Resolutions

This panel will discuss resolutions to the challenges faced in implementing a program in a community setting. Our work was part of a one-year practicum in community intervention and action research methods. In devising our resolutions we relied heavily on instructor and colleague feedback and suggestions as well as our own reactions and feelings to the challenges. Our intention is to share our experiences using the traditional collaborative procedures such as gaining entry, immersing ourselves in the setting and soliciting multiple perspectives. We especially highlight our reliance on emotional reactions and attention to interpersonal cues in addressing emerging concerns.

The current work focused on establishing a Teen Council at a local Boys and Girls Club. The staff sanctioned development of a teen council in response to low teen involvement and poor teen-staff relations. Potential problems exist in any university/community collaboration. Those we encountered could be grouped into the following categories: staff attitudes, program structure, club policy and teen relations. Specific examples and solutions within each category will be presented and discussed.
