Descriptive Statistics and PASW/SPSS
Goal: Perform univariate data analyses for the datasets
"Age at First Inauguration" and "Ave Jan Illinois Precipitation."
Download: Download the datasets from
univariate.xls.
The datasets are on the sheets "Age at Inauguration" and "Illinois
Precipitation."
Important: Export output from the SPSS Output Window
into your Word document to submit. Only include relevant output. Don't
include SPSS source code and other documentation. At the top of your
submission, answer the starred questions to show that you found the
requested output.
Activity 2a
- Import the Age at Inauguration worksheet from the univariate.xls
Excel file.
- Using the dataset "Age at First Inauguration,"
obtain the following information from the SPSS output.
- *Determine the sample mean and standard deviation by following the
directions in Part E of the SPSS Tutorial.
- *Determine the minimum (Q0), first quartile (Q1), median (Q2),
third quartile (Q3) and maximum (Q4) by following the directions
in Part F of the SPSS Tutorial.
- Produce a boxplot of the Age at First Inauguration Dataset.
- *List any outliers in this dataset that are shown in the
box plot produces by the analysis from Part F.
- *Sort the dataset by AgeAtInauguration (Part G of the SPSS Tutorial).
In your Word document, type the names of the presidents that are
closest to the minimum, maximum, median, first quartile and third quartile
of the age.
- Produce a histogram of the AgeAtInauguration (Part H
of the SPSS Tutorial).

- Using the dataset "Ave Jan Illinois Precipitation."
Also, see part A for the relevent sections in the SPSS Tutorial.
- *Compute the sample mean and standard deviation.
- *Compute Q0, Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4.
- Produce a boxplot of the Ave Jan Illinois Precipitation.
- *List any outliers in this dataset, according to the boxplot.
- *After sorting the data, list the years that are closest to the
minimum, maximum, median, first quartile and third quartile of
the precipitation.
- Produce a histogram of the Ave Jan Illinois Precipitation.
