Things to Avoid on your Website

  1. Times New Roman font.

  2. Centering entire paragraphs.

  3. Background images or colors that hide or clash with the text on the page. Avoid the Dick Tracy syndrome of using many different primary colors. Pastel colors are usually easier on the eyes, and can be combined into a more pleasant color scheme.

  4. Some images make your site interesting, but don't use too many images.

  5. Links that are invisible after they have been visited.

  6. Links to the right or at the bottom of the page. Make links easy to find.

  7. Images that are too large. Images in IT 231 should be no larger than 25 K, except for possibly background images. Use GIF or JPEG files when possible because these are compressed and load more quickly than BMP ones.

  8. Animated GIF files.

  9. Blinking or scrolling text.

  10. Web pages that play audio.

  11. Clickable images, used for hyperlinks. Use text for your hyperlinks instead.

  12. Underlined normal text. Use bold face or italics for emphasis for normal text. Reserve underlined text for hyperlinks.

  13. Long pages, or pages that require horizontal scrolling.

  14. Paragraphs are not usually indented on websites, but this not as serious as the preceding items.
