HCI 201 -- Ex2 -- Card Sorting for Design of Hobby Website

Goal: To use card sorting to help design the information architecture for your HobbyWebsite project.

  1. Pick a hobby that you think might be suitable for your HobbyWebsite project.

  2. Tear an 8 1/2" by 11" piece of paper into eight rectangular pieces called cards. Use more sheets if you need more than eight cards.

  3. Number the cards consecutively.

  4. On each card, write a task that a user of your site should be able to perform. Express these tasks as objects or as actions. Be consistant: either use all objects or all actions.

  5. Break into small groups of size 4.

  6. Let each of the other three persons in your small group sort your cards into groups of cards. Record the results of the card sorting before passing the cards to the next person. Here is an example card sorting result with 9 cards:

    Group A: 2, 5, 6, 7
    Group B: 1, 3, 4
    Group C: 8, 9

Each person that sorts the cards is free to decide how many groups there are.
