BusinessWebsite project. The grace period for this
project expires on Saturday, March 18. There will be a 5 point late
penalty if it is submitted on March 19, a 10 point late penalty if it
is submitted on Monday. No exercises or projects will be accepted after
Monday, March 18.
- Your BusinessWebsite must be uploaded to the students server to
receive credit.
- The due date of Ex10 (HobbyWebsite Critique) is changed to March 6.
This means that its grace period expires on March 13.
Also, Quizzes 1 through 5 are posted with their answers.
- The
HobbyWebsite evaluation assignments are ready for
Exercise Ex10. Each of you has two websites assigned to evaluate.
Look for your name most likely under Evaluator1 or Evaluator2.
A few names are listed under Evaluator3.
- Reminder: the grace period for the BusinessWebsite project expires
on Tuesday, March 7.
- The grades for the HobbyWebsite project are posted. See the comments
for the grading breakdown: Funct (Functionality 30%), Cont
(Content 30%), Orig (Originality/Creativity 20%), Interest
(Interesting 20%). 5 points was deducted if you did not update the
HobbyWebsite link in your contents page of Ex5.
- A new item has been added to the
Quiz 5 Review Guide:
Be able to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using
frames pages.
- Exercise Ex12 (Critique two business websites) has been cancelled.

of designing HTML files using layers (div tags):
Web Standards: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Why Designers Should Care
- Schedule for course website late penalties if you submit
the website before midnight on the given day:
Get in Before | Late Penalty |
2/28/05 | -5 |
3/3/05 | 0 |
3/5/05 | 5 |
3/7/05 | 10 |
Minus 5 means that you get 5 bonus points for submitting the assignment
early.
- The Quiz 5 Review Guide
is posted. Quiz 5 will occur on March 7. The Makeup Quiz will take
place on March 9.
- 15 out of 29 people have submitted the topic for his or her business
website. If you haven't submitted yours, please do so soon.
- One of the requirements for the HobbyWebsite is that an external style
is used to give a uniform style to the pages in the website.
- Don't forget that each page must have a title that displays in the
browser titlebar for your hobby website. Each page should also have
a heading at the top to display the page title.
- On Tuesday, 2/28, we will see how to add a Theme to your website.
You are not allowed to add a Theme to your hobby website, but can
(and are encouraged to) add a theme to your business website.
- On Thursday, Feb. 23, you will be asked to submit the topic of
your BusinessWebsite project. Submit it as the BWT assignment.
- COLASM is ready to accept submissions of the HobbyWebsite project.
As usual, upload the entire website folder using SSH to the students
server and submit the link as a comment.
- Online professor evaluations start this week and run until
March 3. You should receive an email with directions.
- If you have not decided on the business for your business website
yet, you need
to do it soon. The Business Website plan (Ex9) is due on February 28.
Try to have it finished by the due so you have time to complete
your business website before the end of the quarter.
- One way to make your website look more professional is to use a
smaller font for the paragraph text. This probably means that you will
need more content as well. However, don't make the text so small that
it is hard to read without a magnifying glass. The fairly large default
font that I use for the class website is used to make it easy to read for
people sitting far away from the projection screen.
- Quiz 4 will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
- Warning: do not put textboxes on your webpages. They are rather
unpredictable when the pages are displayed. It is better to use WordArt
(sparingly) or use regular text in paragraphs or as h1 or h2 headers.
- For Ex8, if you used the cut and paste method to move the
Cinderella pages from the class website to FrontPage, some of the
addresses in the links might have been changed from relative to absolute.
In that case you must manually change the absolute links like
http://www.condor.depaul.edu/~sjost/examples/cinderella-files/cin1.htm
to
cin1.htm. The deduction will be 10 points if you leave the
addresses as absolute.
- Schedule for remainder of the quarter:
Feb. 9 | CSS |
Feb. 14 | Lists |
Feb. 16 | More about CSS |
Feb. 21 | Quiz 4 Work on Hobby Website |
Feb. 23 | Designing Your Business Website |
Feb. 28 | FrontPage Themes |
Mar. 2 | Frames |
Mar. 7 | Quiz 5 Cut and Paste JavaScript |
Mar. 9 | Makeup Quiz XML Examples |
Mar. 16 | Help for Business Website |
- The grace period for the HobbyWebsite project expires at
11:59pm on Thursday, Feb. 9.
- Reminder: Late penalties: 0 pts. for 0 to 1 week late (within
grace period), 10 pts. for 1 to 2 weeks late,
30 pts. for 2 to 3 weeks late, 70 pts. for 3 to 4 weeks later.
No assignment will be accepted more than 4 weeks late.
- Reminder: Ex3, Ex5, Ex6, Ex8 and Ex11, as well as the
Hobby and Business websites must be uploaded to the students.depaul.edu
server to receive credit. Do not submit webpages or zip files, but
instead submit a link to the homepage for the exercise or project
in the comment section.
- COLASM is ready to accept Ex7 and Ex8 assignments.
We will complete Ex8 in class on 2/9.
- The grades for Ex5 and Ex6 are posted. Ex6 was based on two factors
Functionality (does it display properly) and Artistic (how artistic is
it compared to everyone else's submission. So far the submissions are
very good. See the details for the grade breakdown.
- You don't have to know about fonts for Quiz 3. They will be
covered on Quiz 4.
- The
Quiz 3 Review Guide has been posted.
- Directions for resizing and cropping images using MS Paint have
been added to the 1/26 Notes.
- Here is a link to the
Jewels in the Sky example.
- If you resubmit an assignment, enter the word "resubmit" in the
comment section with a brief explanation of why you are resubmitting.
- If SSH shows errors when you try to upload or download webpages,
this is most likely due to one of two things:
(1) Your account is full, so you will need to delete some webpages, images
or emails.
(2) One or more file or folder has its permissions set incorrectly.
Use SSH to correct the permissions. If the permission of a file is
set to Read-only on the local PC, change this in the Windows Explorer
by right clicking on the file and selecting Properties. Then uncheck
the Read-only checkbox.
- The grades for exercise Ex2 are being posted. Some students did not
complete all of the required sections. See Section 7 (To Turn In)
of the Ex2 Description. Several people
did not turn in section c: "Comment briefly on the results in b. ..."
You may resubmit the omitted section(s). Only the resubmitted section(s)
will be subject to a late penalty, so resubmit as soon as possible.
- This is a clarification of the last two terms on the
Quiz2 Review Guide:
Absolute Link: A link to a webpage that is not in your site.
An absolute link always begins with http://.
Relative Link: A link to a webpage that is in your site.
A relative link never begins with http://.
- Some of the posted grades are marked "resubmit." These must be
resubmitted soon to avoid late penalties.
- Exercise Ex6 (Color and Images with Tables and Layers) is to
create an artistic collage using images that you collect. Start thinking
about the subject for your collage. Also start collecting images to
use for your collage. Do not use images of planets. Sketch your
collage on paper before you start working on it in FrontPage.
- Homework exercises Ex3 and later will receive a late penalty
if they must be resubmitted.
- Whenever you upload a project and submit the link as a comment
on the COLASM, be sure to test the link after you submit it.
- Remember, your name, assignment number and submission date
must appear at the top of all submitted documents, whether HTML files
or MS-Word Documents.
- If you were not in class on Tuesday, Jan. 17, when we conducted
the card sorting exercise (Ex2) in small groups, you must complete the exercise
anyway. Either ask three people in class to sort your cards or
ask some of your friends to sort them. The grace period for Ex2 expires
on Tuesday, 1/17.
- Attendence on 1/12 will be taken by noting the people that
pick up their quiz. If you did not take the quiz, let me know that
you are in class.
- The scores for Quiz1 are posted. The score on the quiz is
the raw score. Four points were added to the raw score to obtain
the scale score, which is posted on COLASM.
- Look at the Ex4 Description.
We will discuss some web design principles for evaluating websites
on 1/17 and 1/19.
- The Quiz 2 Review Guide
for 1/14/06 is posted.
It will be revised according to what we cover next week.
- I will not be available for office hours (3:00pm to 3:45pm)
on Thursday, Nov. 12.
- Reminder: Quiz1 will be held on Tuesday, January 10,
from 1:30pm to 1:50pm.
See the Quiz 1 Review Guide for details.

- The document

has been revised.
- The five quizzes will be given on the dates
1/10, 1/24, 2/7, 2/21, 3/7.
A makeup quiz will be given on 3/9.
The quiz with the worst score will be dropped.
- Go to ID Services to obtain a students.depaul.edu account as
soon as possible. This will be an account on the server where you will
upload your class websites. This is the same as your email account,
but NOT the same as Campus Connect.
- Your password for your students.depaul.edu account is NOT
the same as your campus connect password. It is your email password.
If you have forgotten it, contact ID services to have it reset.
You can also call the Technology Assistance Help Desk at
312.362.8765. They should be able to reset your password over the phone.
- If you try to log in with the wrong password three times, you will
be locked out of your students.depaul.edu account. Go to ID services
or call the help desk to get your account reset.
- Your life in HCI 201 will be much easier if you own a
memory stick for saving your exercises and projects (128Meg or 256Meg).
- Go to ID Services to apply for your student computer
account if you do not already have one. This account is also used
for student email. Go to the link
http://is.depaul.edu/communication/web/personal_students.asp for
more information.
- Make sure that your Microsoft File Explorer is set to show
file extensions.
1. You can invoke the MS File Explorer by selecting Start,
All Programs, Accessories, and Windows Explorer.
2. From the MS File Explorer, select Tools,
Folder Options.... Select the View tab and
