Information for Obtaining OWL

We will use an online tutoring and testing system called OWL for extra credit assignments, if you want to participate, you will need to get an access code for OWL. There are several ways to do this:

  1. Buy a new textbook from the DePaul bookstore in person or online. The textbook is Java Programming: From Problem Analysis to Program Design, 3rd Edition, by D. S. Malik, Thomson Course Technology, 2007.

A new book comes bundled (shrink wrapped) with an OWL access card. A used book does not come with an OWL access card. The DePaul bookstore web site lists two versions of the book; you should buy the new book listed as “required” because that is the one bundled with the OWL access card.

  2. Get the book in some other way (make sure you get the 3rd edition) and then buy an OWL access card separately. You can buy an OWL access card from the DePaul bookstore in person or online for about $42. (The bookstore web site lists used cards, but these do not exist because a code cannot be reused.) Or you can buy an OWL access card from Thomson for about $45 but you must phone Thomson at 800-648-7450 and then wait for the card to arrive in the mail, which can take a week.

Warning: Online booksellers may tell you the book comes with a registration code, but this is a registration code inside the book’s front cover for the Testing Center at www.course.com/testingcenter. This is an old system that we are not using and it is not the same as OWL. If it is difficult for you to buy an OWL access code because you are a DL student and you enrolled in the course late, email me and I will try to obtain an access code for you.
