• Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (Michigan Upper Peninsula)
  

  In my opinion, one of the best places for backpacking in the upper Midwest. This was the site of my first major trip in 1974, and there haven't been many years when I haven't returned.

• Canadian Rockies.
  

  I was introduced to these mountains on my first trip out west in 1978 and fell in love with them. Banff, Jasper, Yoho, and Kootenai National Parks are spectacular. Mt. Assiniboine Provincial Park in British Columbia was also the scene of a few memorable trips.

• Glacier National Park & Waterton Lakes National Park (Canada)
  

  Together these two parks form an international park containing great scenery and wilderness; lots of hiking opportunities here. This is also grizzly bear habitat!

• Grand Tetons National Park.

• Olympic NP
  

  Scenery ranges from coastal beaches to rainforest to subalpine terrain of the Olympic Mountains. Contrary to popular opinion, it is possible to experience a few sunny days!

• Boundary Waters Canoe Area/Quetico.
  

  One of the premier places for wilderness canoeing. I've taken several memorable trips there.

• Cross-country skiing
  

  Most of our skiing is done in the Midwest. We enjoy going to far northern Wisconsin and Michigan, where snow is practically guaranteed!
