Religion vs. sexuality

It has come to our attention that some members of the DePaul community think that due to the Catholic nature of the university, issues concerning the gay community have no place on the front page of the DePaulia.

The picture that ran on last week's front page of the DePaulia, which showed two men kissing next to two women kissing, was intended to inform the community about Pride Week. We have received numerous complaints about this picture, most of which center around the fact that DePaul, because it is a Catholic institution, and should not condone or publicize gay interaction.

People forget that one of the most important tenets of Christianity is "Love thy neighbor." People don't have to agree with gay lifestyles, but everyone deserves the same amount of respect regardless of their sexual orientation.

We find it odd that last year when a picture of two heterosexual people kissing ran in Fallout, the DePaulia's literary supplement, we received no complaints. This picture was much larger than the picture that ran on last week's front page. The fact that so many people have protested last week's picture tells us that homophobia is alive and well at DePaul, which means that organizations such as Pride DePaul are definitely still needed at this university.

The "Queer Kiss In" was meant to desensitize the community so that the sight of two gay people kissing would not generate the usual "Oh my God" response. However, the complaints that this picture has generated tell us that people's attitudes regarding gay rights haven't changed much since the 1950s.
