Course Description This course is an introductory music listening course, designed for students who are not majoring in music. The course covers a wide variety of music including folk, religious, jazz, and popular and world music, but has strongest emphasis on Western European classical music. In addition to studying the text and completing homework assignments, students taking this course must attend classes, live concerts, and listen regularly to the required musical examples. Some activities require use of a computer and the internet.
Course Objectives
  • the development of listening skills, including the ability to describe and comment on music heard, both orally and in writing
  • the development of familiarity with the music of many cultures and time periods
  • an exposure to different performance mediums, and to live concerts

  • some experience of  personal musical expression
