E-Mail and Web Pages
All DePaul students are eligible for free E-Mail accounts. This allows E-Mail in a UNIX environment on DePaul’s Shrike computer, as well as the ability for students to set up their own basic web pages.
Students
who do not yet have their E-Mail information should report to ID Card Services
at any campus to request their E-mail account, password, and web-PIN number.
In DePaul Center, ID Card Services is located in Suite 9700 for all ID
card services and student e-mail account transactions. For additional information,
refer to the Information Services E-Mail web page at: http://shrike.depaul.edu/~email
or call (312) 362-8765 (option 3) from 8am to midnight (Mon-Fri) or 10am
to 6pm (Sat-Sun).
Forwarding Shrike mail to your other accounts
Students wishing to forward/copy
their Shrike E-mail messages to one or more other accounts may refer to
the tip sheet on Professor Welsch's web site at http://www.depaul.edu/~gwelsch/mailfwd.htm
Student Electronic Communication Tools
We are fortunate at DePaul to have
available several electronic conferencing software tools to support our
electronic discussions. These include: Majordomo Mailing Lists, HyperNews,
Usenet News, in addition to Web Course In A Box. The richest use of these
tools lies in their ability to support asynchronous (non-simultaneous)
communication; that is, any-time/any-place communications through a common
(text) database. They provide the foundation for electronic meetings, the
virtual office, the virtual organization, the virtual university, etc.
We can use these tools to help prepare for in-class discussions, and to
support our work within and across teams.
Class Notes and Homework Solutions in Adobe Acrobat
For your convenience, I provide
as a free download class notes and homework solutions in Adobe Acrobat
software for most of my courses in the specific course web site. Adobe
Acrobat is a toolset for converting electronic files created in various
applications into the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF), and publishing
them on the Web, intranet, CD-ROM, or e-mail. It keeps the documents’ original
look and feel intact. A popular example is IRS forms. Acrobat Reader is
a free downloadable plug-in, which allows you to view, navigate, and print
PDF files across all major computing platforms. This means that where ever
you are in the world, you will be able to obtain the class notes and check
your homework solutions by accessing your course web site.
Internet Access
Internet access is required almost
weekly in my courses. DePaul provides Internet access in several ways:
free access through its many computer labs, free student E-Mail accounts
with Internet access through Lynx, and for a $25 quarterly fee, home access
through DePaul Online. Students who do not find it convenient to use DePaul’s
Computer Lab facilities or Lynx are required to subscribe to DePaul Online
(see below) or some other Internet Service Provider. More information can
be obtained from DePaul’s Information Services Department web site at:
http://is.depaul.edu or the Shrike computer
information page at http://shrike.depaul.edu
Open Access Computer Lab
There are ten Computer Labs spread across DePaul’s six campuses with day, evening and weekend hours free of charge to you as a DePaul student. Windows 95, the Microsoft Professional Office Suite, UNIX E-Mail and the World Wide Web are resources that are available to you through all DePaul Labs free of charge. Check for a listing of the location, phone number and hours of each Lab by accessing the Information Services web site at: http://www.depaul.edu/is/tac/labs.html or http://service.depaul.edu/labs
Note that holiday and exam-week
hours differ each quarter and need to be checked in advance!
DePaul Online
DePaul Online provides a SLIP/PPP
connection to the Internet, enabling students and faculty to use E-mail
and the World Wide Web from their homes. The fee is $90 for the year or
$25 for one quarter with no additional hourly fee, except the telephone
charge by Ameritech, which is tiny for students located within the nineteen
basic service areas. DePaul Online information and applications are now
available via the World Wide Web at: http://www.depaul.edu/~dpowebpg.
Users who wish to subscribe should fill out this electronic application
or call (312)362-8765 (option 5) from 8am to midnight (Mon-Fri) or 10am
to 6pm (Sat -Sun).
The Q-Drive
DePaul’s Information Services Department
makes available to faculty and students a network drive, referred to as
the Q-Drive, which is accessible from all DePaul Computer Labs, so that
students can access, print, and copy (download) files for course work from
the Q-Drive. In general, it behaves like any other disk drive, but it is
configured as a read-only drive. For your convenience, certain course materials
will be located on the Q-drive as backup. You may access the Q-Drive from
any DePaul Computer Lab. At this time, the Q-Drive cannot be accessed remotely.
DePaul Libraries
The DePaul Center and Lincoln Park
Campus Libraries are world class, and we have many librarians on both campuses
who are familiar with the resources available on the Internet, who provide
classroom Internet training, and who can assist you in your work. We even
have our own Accounting reference librarian Chris Hoeppner, MLS, CPA in
the DPC 10th floor Library. Homework solutions are also maintained
at the DPC Library Reception Desk. The Library web site is easily accessed
through the general DePaul web site, or directly at: http://www.lib.depaul.edu
Information Services Web Site
DePaul’s Information Services Department
provides a web site for DePaul Students on a variety of topics regarding
the computer, the Internet and the services IS provides. Be sure to check
out the IS web site at: http://is.depaul.edu
